Bundaberg Base Moving at Pase

Leading Queensland building contractor Northbuild is progressing in earnest on the four stage re-development and refurbishment of Bundaberg Base Hospital. Northbuild’s contract includes design and construction. At peak activity there will be around 120 construction workers each day on the site.

Extensive works to the hospital began in late 2008 and will be due for completion late 2010. The estimated thirty million dollar project will enhance health services for local Queenslanders and surrounding communities.

Two of the four buildings that make up Stage One have already been completed, and handed over to the Department of Health. An existing medical supplies and maintenance building was gutted and rebuilt into a state of the art administration block. A new building was constructed on a previously unused area of the Hospital grounds for the medical supplies and maintenance.

A new two level Emergency and Maternity Department is being constructed and will include acute care. Refurbishment to the existing Woman’s Ward will transform it into the Allied Health and Rehabilitation Departments. A major upgrade will also be made to the Imaging and Pharmacy areas.

The last of the extensive works will include an extension to the existing Mental Health Department and a full internal refurbishment to the Mental Health Ward. This stage will include a significant upgrade to existing fires services, mechanical services, air conditioning units and new generators for emergency power.

Northbuild Project Manager Wayne Berquist, attributes the quick delivery of the job so far, to the outstanding co-operation of hospital staff.

“We have a great working relationship with the nurses and staff and we couldn’t have done it without them.”

Northbuild Construction has sourced local subcontractors and suppliers and includes the engagement of on-site apprentices and trainees.
