St. Mary's College New Home Economics, Tuckshop & Classroom Refurbishment

Architect:  Ian Kauter

Completion Time:  8 weeks

Awards:  2015 Downs & Western Region Award

This project entailed the refurbishment of three classrooms and the construction of a state of the art the Home Economics Classroom, Coffee Shop and Canteen.

The construction duration was approximately eighteen weeks over the period including December 2013 to April 2014.

The new facilities are independently acclaimed as being some of the best in Toowoomba – rivaling even the best equipped commercial kitchens.

The Home Economics room is a stunning picture of clean stainless steel lines and stark white vinyl, accentuated by a multitude of coloured kitchen appliances and contrasting dark floor vinyl. A marble chocolate tempering bench provides a contemporary touch, while a combi-oven, pass through dishwasher will expose students to their future ‘tools of the culinary trade’ . Twelve fully equipped cooking stations ensure plenty of ‘hands on’ opportunity for substantial class sizes.

The brightly colourful canteen integrates a cold room/ drinks servery, and includes a bank of combi ovens, pass through dish washer, storage room, generous preparation areas, fryers and more. It is amply equipped to meet the day to day throughput of a large school and could easily provide for sitting of over 100 diners, on or off site.

A Coffee Shop opens to one of the main court yards, providing a ‘win-win’ for budding barristers and the cravings of hard-working teaching staff. A showy stainless steel ‘wander up’ servery gives a welcoming shop-front feel.
